Betty the Elf Learns How MDARD Protects Michigan Shoppers This Holiday Season

LANSING - With holiday shopping in full swing, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) had a visitor from the North Pole stop by to see all the ways MDARD inspectors make sure you are getting what you pay for with every purchase.

Betty the Elf took some time out her busy holiday schedule to visit with MDARD's Weights and Measures Program staff, who help protect consumers by verifying the accuracy of packages, scales, fuel pumps, and other devices used for daily commercial transactions, whether you're a shopper or a business.

"The holidays mean more shopping, and MDARD plays a key role in helping shoppers get exactly what they pay for," said Tim Boring, MDARD Director. "Whether it's a deli scale, a gas pump, or a digital checkout system, our Weights and Measures Program ensures Michigan consumers get the right quantity and value for their money."

During her visit, Betty the Elf saw first-hand how MDARD's inspectors routinely check the accuracy of devices used in commercial transactions. By conducting routine inspections on things like fuel pumps, grocery store scales, and digital checkout systems, MDARD helps consumers get the right amount of product they're paying for and ensure businesses are complying with state and federal laws.

MDARD offers these helpful tips for consumers:

  • Check the scale: Whether you're buying meat, produce, or packaged goods, confirm the weight on the scale matches the price at checkout. If something seems off, let staff know about the suspected problem.
  • Know your rights: If you suspect an error with the weight or measure, contact MDARD s Weights and Measures Program at 517-655-8202.
  • Inspect the gas pump: You can check the pump's certification sticker to verify it has been inspected by MDARD, ensuring you are receiving the correct amount of fuel for the price you're paying.

MDARD also encourages business owners to take proactive steps to stay compliant:

  • Regular equipment maintenance: Schedule periodic checks to make sure your equipment is operating correctly and within legal limits.
  • Employee training: Train your staff to properly use measuring equipment, including tare weights and other factors affecting product quantities.
  • Internal reviews: Regularly review your operations and conduct internal audits to verify weights and measures are being followed.

"Accurate measurements not only protect consumers but also strengthen business operations," said Craig VanBuren, MDARD's Laboratory and Consumer Protection Bureau Director. "By following these best practices, business owners can avoid costly errors and build customer trust."
