Mayor Broome Celebrates Grand Opening of Amazon Fulfillment Center

Baton Rouge, LA - August 1, 2024 - Today marks the grand opening of the highly anticipated Amazon Fulfillment Center at the former Cortana Mall site, a significant milestone in revitalizing one of Baton Rouge's main corridors. The $200 million, 3.4 million-square-foot facility at the intersection of Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard stands as a testament to Baton Rouge's commitment to economic development and job creation.

"I remember when this journey began at Washington Mardi Gras more than four years ago," said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. "It took leadership from all of us to bring Amazon to Baton Rouge. I was proud to do my part by approving local incentives that complemented our state partners in coordination with our Metropolitan Council, BRAC, and the Capital Area Finance Authority. What Baton Rouge received in return was a $200 million investment in this facility and more than 1,000 new local jobs - representing more than $36 million annual payroll for local residents."

The Amazon facility has already begun revitalizing a key area of our community, catalyzing prosperity through the Cortana Economic Development District and the Florida Corridor Master Plan. The facility has also spurred significant economic activity, with new establishments like Starbucks, Family Dollar, and Planet Fitness opening nearby. Additionally, site work has commenced on an Aldi grocery store set to open before the end of the year.

Mayor Broome thanked the Metropolitan Council and acknowledged District 6 Councilman Cleve Dunn Jr. for his leadership and involvement in the area's revitalization.

"I thank Amazon for their investment and for being a catalyst for economic growth in Baton Rouge. This partnership exemplifies what can be achieved when we work together towards a shared vision for our city's future," said Councilman Dunn.

Amazon has committed to offering competitive wages and comprehensive benefits, starting with pay of $17.50 an hour and access to health care, dental care, 401(k), and paid parental leave for most employees.
