GAUTENG - This year, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is observing Women's Month by highlighting the work of its women in blue who go beyond the call of duty to serve and protect South Africans and visitors to the country.

Today, we introduce the nation to Sergeant Monyamane Moeketsi, an investigator attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Temba, Gauteng.

Being an FCS investigator places Moeketsi at the forefront of fighting crimes against women, children and other vulnerable persons.

Currently, there are 176 FCS units and nine Serial and Electronic Crimes Investigations (SECI) units nationwide mandated to investigate sexual crimes, person-directed crimes (assault), the illegal removal of children under the age of 12 (kidnapping, abduction and missing persons) and crimes facilitated through electronic media (child pornography).

To date, Moeketsi has successfully secured 14 life term sentences and an additional 338 years' imprisonment for 20 sexual predators who are now behind bars.

Moeketsi, who joined the Service 14 years ago, says career highlights are many but particularly takes pride in solving a serial rape case which was finalised in court with a conviction earlier this year.

On 15 May 2024 the Temba Magistrates' court sentenced 39-year-old Kabelo John Bokaba to five life term sentences and an additional 115 years' imprisonment on multiple counts of rape, compelled rape, sexual assault and robbery with aggravated circumstances.

During his 'reign of terror', Bokaba attacked, raped and robbed female victims, aged between 14 and 40 years, within the communities of Sekampaneng, Bosplaas East and West bushes, Tregina (Drygin) bushes, Carousel View and other surrounding areas of Temba.

This serial rape case was assigned to Moeketsi who immediately commenced with her investigations. She meticulously pieced all the available leads together which ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect. Through the application of investigative techniques and technologies she was able to build a solid case against the accused in court.

Moeketsi, a mother of two, says when a case docket lands on her desk she leaves no stone unturned to trace and arrest the sexual predator. She adds by saying that she has a passion for solving complex cases and uncovering hidden information as most of her suspects are unknown at first.

"I always wanted to become a police officer, particularly an FCS investigator. When I was a teenager, members from the Child Protection Unit visited my high school to raise awareness - I knew from there that I was destined to become a member of the South African Police Service," said Moeketsi.

South Africans can rest assured that Sergeant Monyamane Moeketsi will stop at nothing to crack a case to ensure justice is served!
