Sacramento Community Police Review Commission, SPD host community meeting to discuss annual military equipment use report and policy

The Sacramento Community Police Review Commission, in collaboration with the Sacramento Police Department, is hosting a community meeting to discuss SPD's annual military equipment use report and policy.

The meeting will be held 6-9 p.m. on Monday, July 22, at the Oak Park Community Center (3425 Martin Luther King Blvd.)

The public is invited to attend and participate. Parents with children are welcome, and food will be provided at the meeting.

"Sacramento residents deserve to be engaged more deeply and thoughtfully in the general policies and practices of the Sacramento Police Department, especially in how it uses military equipment in our neighborhoods," said Keyan Bliss, chair of the Sacramento Community Police Review Commission. "The goal of this meeting is to provide an open dialogue between residents and the police that we hope provides greater transparency, better understanding of the mutual needs of community and police officers, and leads to an equitable balance between ensuring public safety for community members and accountability from police."

The meeting will include introductions, a presentation by SPD on annual military equipment use, a Q&A session and closing remarks.

For interpretation needs for the meetings, please email the City's Community Engagement Office at [email protected] or call 916-808-5640 at least 72 hours in advance.

California Assembly Bill 481 requires law enforcement agencies to obtain approval of the applicable governing body (such as City Council) by adoption of a military equipment use policy prior to taking certain actions related to the funding, acquisition or use of military equipment as defined by the legislature.

The Sacramento Community Police Review Commission was established for the purpose of providing recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on bias-free policing and the implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of efforts intended to strengthen community-police relations.

The Sacramento Police Department greatly values community feedback and remains committed to building trust through transparency and collaboration with the community.

The department also has developed this online survey as an additional avenue for community input regarding military equipment use and the concerns surrounding it. SPD continues to research and implement innovative ways to keep the community safe and officers safe.
