Decker College professor honored by the American Academy of Nursing

The American Academy of Nursing has honored Rosemarie Rizzo Parse, PhD, RN, FAAN, a faculty member at Binghamton University's Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, with one of its most prestigious annual awards.

Parse, a research professor and visiting scholar in the college's Division of Nursing, has been selected as one of the 2024 Lifetime Legacy Award recipients. This award recognizes her exceptional leadership in advancing nursing knowledge, research, education and practice.

"I am honored and grateful to receive the American Academy of Nursing's Lifetime Legacy Award. It is an exceptional recognition of my life's work," said Parse, who joined Decker College in 2016.

Parse is a world-renowned nurse theorist known for her theory on Humanbecoming, which has shaped more than 100 national and international health policies related to patient-centered care. The Humanbecoming paradigm explores the ethics and tenets of human dignity and has led to teaching-learning, mentoring, leading-following, community, family and concept-inventing models used globally.

A distinguished professor emeritus at Loyola University Chicago, Parse is also the founder and editor of Nursing Science Quarterly and president of Discovery International. Her previous appointments include dean of the Duquesne University School of Nursing and professor and coordinator of the Center for Nursing Research at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Parse was the first visiting eminent nursing scholar at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University and served as a consultant and visiting scholar at the New York University College of Nursing.

She has authored 11 books and more than 150 articles and editorials that have been translated into multiple languages. Parse regularly consults with educational programs in nursing and with multiple disciplines in healthcare settings worldwide.

"This is an amazing award to honor Dr. Parse's work and a wonderful recognition of the caliber of faculty at Binghamton University," said Mario Ortiz, dean of Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Parse will receive the Lifetime Legacy Award during the American Academy of Nursing's Health Policy Conference Oct. 31-Nov. 2, in Washington, D.C.
