Innovative 'megafloor' at UCI Health ― Irvine will transform surgical efficiency

IN THE NEWS: The new surgical "megafloor" under construction at the acute care hospital on the UCI Health ― Irvine campus will streamline operations, reduce waste and errors and enable more inpatient and outpatient procedures.

The 56,000-square-foot space, which connects inpatient and outpatient operating rooms over two buildings, was recently featured in Healthcare Design magazine. The innovative design aims to improve efficiency and flexibility by allowing the surgical department to decide how each room can best be used according to the day's needs.

To bring this concept to realization, CO Architects' Los Angeles-based architecture and interiors team, working in conjunction with design-build project leader Hensel Phelps, built the megafloor virtually in a computer model and ran it through a year of simulated operations to eliminate bottlenecks and test any imaginable scenario.

The UCI Health [surgeon Dr. Sebastian D. Schubl] oversaw the "virtual year" and made modifications to the workflow, which were then also simulated and proven out.

The seven-story acute care hospital is on track to begin serving patients in October 2025.
