The Arizona State University Police Department has acquired a state-of-the-art DUI processing van to enhance its traffic and DUI enforcement efforts.

The Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) provided the Mobile DUI processing van to ASU Police for use as a central hub to process intoxicated driving incidents and manage other traffic duties on the roads surrounding campus. The van is clearly marked with visible decals and features emergency lighting equipment.

"Our new Mobile DUI van enhances the operational capabilities of the Arizona State University Police Department," said John Thompson, Interim Chief of Police. "This vehicle allows us to better manage DUI and traffic details, especially during large events that require a lot of coordination between us and partnering city agencies.

"It's a crucial tool that will help us protect students, faculty, staff and visitors on and around our campuses. We value our relationship with GOHS and thank them for their ongoing support to our department and those around the state. Their efforts help make our communities and roads safer."

The Mobile DUI processing van is equipped with advanced communication systems, including radio and internet connectivity, ensuring continuous communication even in challenging conditions. The van will also contain an Intoxilyzer and booking equipment, which will allow DUI subjects to be released to a responsible party after their processing is completed, instead of transporting them to a detention facility.

Eliminating the transporting of DUI subjects to detention facilities is a more efficient use of an officer's time, allowing them to return to patrolling duties sooner. It also clears space in detention facilities for those accused of committing more serious offenses.

ASU Police showcased the Mobile DUI processing van to the community for the first time during the ASU Sun Devils football game against Wyoming Aug. 31. The department will conduct a series of training exercises in the coming weeks and months to ensure all personnel are familiar with the new equipment and can utilize it effectively in real-world scenarios.

The ASU Police Department extends its gratitude to the Arizona GOHS and all who contributed to this vital addition to university public safety resources.
