As the opening ceremony of the "China-Southeast Asia Capacity Building Workshop", the joint symposium on "Transforming TVET and Adult Education for Sustainable Rural Development" was successfully held at Beijing Normal University on June 13, 2024, to promote cooperation between Southeast Asia Countries and China in TVET and Adult Education and Lifelong Learning. This workshop was jointly organized by Beijing Normal University, the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (INRULED), the UNESCO Beijing Office, and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Technical Education Development (SEAMEO TED). It was aimed at fostering exchange of knowledge, experiences, information and best practices in TVET, adult education and lifelong learning among the education ministry officials, colleges, institutions, from China and eight Southeast Asian countries, discussing on strategies to promote skills transformation in the rural areas.

The symposium attracted over 100 policymakers, experts, scholars, managers and educational practitioners in the field of TVET and adult education from China and eight Southeast Asian countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, attended the symposium on site, and more than 1,500 people joined live broadcast online. The symposium was chaired by Dr Zhao Yuchi, Executive Director of UNESCO INRULED, and Dr. Qi Xinjian, Programme Specialist of UNESCO INRULED.
