McKinney enhances downtown cultural experience with free trolley service

Downtown trolley operates on a fixed route on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays

McKINNEY, Texas (July 12, 2024) - Residents and visitors of McKinney can enjoy a new way to experience the city's Historic Downtown Cultural District. The City of McKinney and McKinney Main Street are pleased to introduce a free downtown trolley service, operating Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This service enhances the downtown experience, offering a convenient and enjoyable way to explore while connecting people to the city's rich history.

The downtown trolley will offer stops along the fixed route. Passengers will have the flexibility to hop on or off at any point downtown. The average time for a complete route is approximately 20 minutes. The trolley is ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all.

By connecting riders with the old interurban railway, the trolley serves as a reminder of McKinney's historical roots and the role the railway played in shaping the city's development. Interurban electric rail service reached McKinney in 1912, providing residents with a fast and reliable means of transportation to Dallas and nearby cities. This was a significant development for McKinney as it facilitated the movement of goods and people, contributing to the growth of local businesses and industries.

Funding for this project is made possible through the generous support of McKinney Main Street, sponsorships, the McKinney Community Development Corporation, and hotel tax dollars.

In addition to serving the public, the downtown trolley is available for rent, offering a unique and memorable experience for private events and special occasions.
