Just after 9:30 AM on Saturday, November 9, 2024, the Sheriff's Communications Center received a call from a business stating that private security officers were performing chest compressions on a man they were initially trying to handcuff. Sacramento County Sheriff's North Patrol Deputies and the Sacramento Metro Fire District responded to the scene and arrived moments later. They continued life-saving measures when the subject, an adult male, was transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased approximately an hour later.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and began a death investigation. Based on their preliminary investigation, they learned the private security guards attempted to detain the subject for a trespassing violation. When they were trying to place the subject in handcuffs, they reported he became resistive and used a Taser on him. The subject became unresponsive when security personnel began CPR and called 911. Detectives were able to collect video from the security guards' body cameras, as well as the Taser used in the incident.
While no criminal charges are suspected at this time, the investigation is ongoing as a precaution.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will make the victim's identification publicly available in accordance with their protocols.
