The 2024 Tree Giveaway Species – Which one will you choose

Each fall, Keep Denton Beautiful looks forward to our signature autumn event - the Community Tree Giveaway. Now in our twenty-sixth year, it takes only a few hours for all the trees to be accounted for. Each species is native or adapted and has been selected for Denton's soil and climate. This year, residents will have their choice of a variety of 6 different species, some large shade trees and smaller trees to provide an under canopy too! Check out each species below.

Registration for the 700 available trees opens to the public on Tuesday, Sept. 24th at 10 a.m. We recommend making sure you've set up your account ahead of time so all you have to do is select your tree and check out when registration has opened.

Once you have found your favorite species, check out this quick guide to ensure that a tree is just what you are looking for and perfect for your yard. We look forward to sharing these trees for planting just in time for Texas Arbor Day!

Autumn Blaze Maple (Acer freemanii 'Jeffsred')

This tree is a hybrid of silver and red maples making it adaptable to climate and soil types. The Autumn Blaze Maple provides beautiful color all year with bright green foliage in the spring turning into a vibrant red in fall. If heartiness and bold color is not enough, this maple does not drop seed pods!

Nellie R. Stevens Holly (Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens')

The Nellie R. Stevens Holly has beautiful dark green foliage all year long. This hybrid is a great fit for Denton as it is drought tolerant and adaptable to a variety of soil types.

Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii)

With a wide, symmetrical crown, the Shumard Oak makes an excellent shade tree! This red oak produces acorns that grow up to 1.25" long and 1" in diameter.

Cedar Elm (Ulmus Crassifolia Nutt.)

This tree will reach a mature height of 50 - 70 feet, making an excellent shade tree. It's drought tolerance makes it a great choice for hot Texas summers. In the autumn you'll be delighted by yellow to orange-red leaves.

Chinkapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii)

With a distinct, sawtooth edge leaf and small acorns, the Chinkapin Oak is an impressive and attractive member of the white oak tree family. The mature height of these trees is typically between 50 - 80 feet, making it a valuable shade tree for your yard or property.

Texas Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

These beautiful trees are fast growing and are on the smaller side when mature, typically reaching 25-30 feet in height. In spring their iconic pink blossoms make them the 'harbinger of spring,' and the heart-shaped green leaves that follow the blossoms make them easy to identify. Denton is the proud Redbud Capital of Texas, so if you're looking for a smaller tree for your landscape, look no further.
