To support students of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education ("HKDSE") to further pursue their dreams during university studies, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) offers a wide range of scholarships to enable students with different aspirations to realize their full potential at the University. A total of over HK$45 million has been earmarked for the 2024 intake of local students. Students who meet the academic requirements will have the opportunity to receive scholarships ranging from HK$50,000 to up to HK$500,000. Meanwhile, those who have obtained 5** in seven or more subjects in the HKDSE Examination, will be awarded scholarships of up to HK$1 million as a token of encouragement*. In addition to full tuition fees, the scholarships also cover financial support for overseas study and living expenses, providing students the opportunities to study abroad at the world's top universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, etc.

HKU has always been advocating whole-person education. While attaching great importance to students' academic performance, HKU also aims to provide students, regardless of arts, science, or business disciplines, with comprehensive experiences through various overseas learning opportunities to broaden their horizons and build networks. For example, the Faculty of Law has partnered with the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford to implement the Visiting Student Scheme, which allows students with outstanding academic performance to study in the United Kingdom for one year. In addition, students from all faculties and programmes of HKU have the opportunity to go overseas as exchange students, undertake internships in large-scale corporations, or participate in community services during their studies, enabling them to go beyond the classroom and explore the world.

Kyle Hui, a fifth-year MBBS student, chose to pursue a Master of Science in Bioethics at Harvard University during his Enrichment Year. Having had a longstanding interest in humanities and history since his childhood, Kyle credited the experiences he gained in the United States for having a positive impact on both his professional and personal growth. He shared, "During my time in the US, I met classmates from various nationalities and age groups. Collaborating on group projects exposed me to diverse cultures and ways of thinking. These experiences have polished my communication skills and are beneficial to my future career in medicine as I tend to patients from different backgrounds." Kyle emphasized that the scholarship was instrumental in supporting his dream to study in the US, "The scholarship provided by HKU enabled me to have a rich and multifaceted learning experience in the US. Outside of class, I joined the Harvard table tennis team and represented the university in state-wide competitions, winning several awards in the process. I also had the opportunity to travel to Mexico and Europe with my classmates during the holidays, which further broadened my horizons." Upon his return to Hong Kong, Kyle applied the knowledge and experiences gained in the US by interning at a non-profit medical humanitarian aid organization, where he contributed to a project on writing a code of ethics. "Without the scholarship, I would not have been able to navigate my studies and life in the US with the same ease." He reflected.

HKU supports the all-round development of students by providing extensive support and encouraging students to realize their full potential in non-academic areas. The University proactively discovers and admits talented students through various admission and scholarship schemes, creating opportunities for students to develop their abilities. For instance, HKU has launched the First in the School Scholarship; the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS), under which students are nominated by secondary schools for admission based on their special talents; and the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS), which encourages outstanding athletes to pursue both academic and athletic development. Each of these admission schemes offers a wide range of scholarships. Scholarships are also available to help students who wish to pursue their dreams of completing the dual degree programmes jointly offered by HKU and other renowned overseas universities. In addition, our faculties have set up entrance scholarships encompassing different areas to encourage students with outstanding performance.

HKU believes that students can make good use of the scholarships to pursue their dreams and enhance themselves through out-of-classroom experiences. The University will continue to provide diversified academic opportunities for students of different backgrounds and nurture global talents for Hong Kong.
