Mayor leads Armistice Day Service

A two-minute silence to remember the nation's war dead has been observed by officials and members of the public in Borehamwood today (Monday 11 November), Armistice Day.

At the 11th hour, the Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Richard Butler, led a poignant ceremony attended by other civic dignitaries, our Councillors and employees and members of the public outside our Civic Offices.

As part of the ceremony, a reading was given by Royal British Legion Representative, Carol Denbigh, before bugler, Adrian Temple, played the Last Post and the crowd fell silent to remember those who have been affected by war and conflict.

The ceremony ended with the raising of the Remembrance Day flag and a prayer from the Mayor's Chaplain, Reverend Sarah Marshall.

Cllr Butler said: "It was an honour to lead this year's Armistice Day service to pay respects to those who sacrificed their lives in both world wars and all subsequent conflicts.

"The two-minute silence gave us all an opportunity to think of all who endured and continue to endure suffering in the name of war.

"I would encourage everyone who is able to support the Poppy Appeal, Royal British Legion's annual fundraising campaign supporting the Armed Forces community. The profits help to provide vital services and support, from expert guidance and advice, to recovery and rehabilitation."

Cllr Butler attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Borehamwood War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday and was represented at seven other Remembrance Sunday services across the borough by borough councillors and senior staff from the council.
