(BOWIE, Md.) - As Ashanti Boone, a computer science major at Bowie State University, prepares to cross the stage to accept her degree during the Winter Commencement Ceremony this week, she has mapped a clear path of next steps to a career where she can address the legal and ethical challenges of AI development.
Boone will be joined by 380 other graduates for the ceremony in the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19. The entertainment mogul MC Lyte will deliver the commencement address.
Boone plans to earn a master's degree in computer science with a specialization in artificial intelligence followed by law school focusing on intellectual property law and AI policy.
The Computer Science Department's support helped Boone secure a prestigious internship at Apple and compete in NASA's pitch competition where her team used NASA's intellectual property to design a baby onesie equipped with nanosensor technology that monitors breathing during sleep.
Boone explains that Bowie State University's curriculum has prepared her to face real-world challenges. "The faculty are very knowledgeable about what's needed to land jobs at major companies. They perfectly prepared us to thrive," said Boone.
