GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, GA (August 11, 2024) - At the request of the DeKalb County Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA. Israel Johnson, age 23, of Atlanta, GA, was shot and injured in the incident. No officers were injured in this incident.

On Sunday, August 11, 2024, at about 9:00 a.m., DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Southland Point in Stone Mountain in reference to a 911 caller indicating that her son, Johnson, was threatening to harm himself. Johnson was armed with a shotgun. As officers arrived on scene, they encountered Johnson in the cul-de-sac near his home. Johnson was holding a shotgun to his head. Officers attempted to communicate with Johnson from their marked patrol units. Johnson began walking towards the officers and pointed the shotgun at the officers. Two officers fired their guns, hittingJohnson. Officers provided aid to Johnson until EMS personnel arrived on scene. Johnson was taken to Grady Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office for review.
