JONESBORO - Arkansas State University held its summer commencement ceremony today at First National Bank Arena. More than 1,200 graduates received their degrees during the ceremony.
"I have no doubt that all of you worked extraordinarily hard to get here today, overcoming life's challenges while balancing your studies with other responsibilities," said Chancellor Todd Shields.

Dr. Shields conferred degrees upon graduates from eight colleges including Agriculture, Neil Griffin College of Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Engineering and Computer Science, Liberal Arts and Communication, Nursing and Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics, and University College. Graduates received doctoral, specialist, master, bachelor and associate degrees, along with program certificates.
Graduating summa cum laude, Catherine Couch of Pocahontas spoke to her fellow graduates.
"As we reflect on our time here, we remember the late nights of studying, the laughter shared on campus, the challenges we faced, and the victories we celebrated," said Couch.
Couch received a bachelor's degree in radiologic science and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
"We have grown not just academically, but as individuals. We have learned the value of resilience, the importance of kindness and the power of community."

As part of the ceremony, an honorary doctoral degree was presented to Jonesboro businessman Nathan LaRue.
"An honorary degree is given to someone who has made a significant and lasting tribute and has demonstrated outstanding achievement. Recipients serve as an example of excellence to the student body and others in the university community," said Shields.

An honorary Doctor of Public Service was awarded to Dr. LaRue in honor of his service to the community.

"He has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and philanthropy both for Arkansas State University and the Jonesboro community. Nathan LaRue's contributions to higher education and the public good are worthy of recognition," Shields added.
