JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to visit Runge Conservation Nature Center this July. MDC staff at the nature center have many exciting conservation-themed events planned for the upcoming month. July events include but are not limited to:

  • Hiking July 17 from 8:00 a.m. until 5 p.m.: Explore Rocky Top Trail at Lake of the Ozarks State Park for a 2.5-mile hike. Participants, ages 18 and older, can meet at Runge Conservation Nature Center or at the trailhead. Hike leaders will contact participants before the hike to give directions if needed. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and pack a lunch/snack. Register at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4LF.
  • Fishing July 19 from 9-11 a.m.: Participants ages 7-12 are invited to fish at Runge Conservation Nature Center. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle and wear appropriate clothing and shoes. All fishing equipment will be provided. Register at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4Lv.
  • Paddle Sports July 19 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.: Join MDC staff at Binder Lake in Jefferson City as we learn about the equipment and techniques needed to kayak safely in Missouri. Then, experience being on the water yourself. This event is for those ages 12 and older, and all equipment will be provided. Register at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4bZ.
  • Nature Art July 20 from 8-10 a.m.: Artists of all experience levels are invited to enjoy a peaceful morning trying their hands at En Plein Air watercolor painting. Participants will learn about select prairie species and tips for painting before creating their own work of art. This event is for participants ages 16 and older. Runge Conservation Nature Center trails are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day, and the nature center building is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The area is located at 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City.
