A note from Mayor Yemi: a different election message

The following is from an op-ed piece that was featured in the Nov. 1 edition of the Pikes Peak Bulletin.

In this election season, which has produced high tension and heavy political rhetoric, I would like to offer a different message to our community. One of hope, light, and privilege that comes with living in a democracy.

As an immigrant to our great nation who labored 21 years to become an American citizen, I strongly believe in the promise of America and in the strength of our democracy. I have confidence in our election officials, including the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office and the individuals stepping up to serve as bipartisan election judges.

I also have confidence in Colorado Springs voters.

One of the greatest rights granted to all citizens of the United States is the right to vote, and we should not take it for granted. The proverb popularized by Spider-Man, "with great power comes great responsibility," is true of our responsibility as citizens to our great nation. Your voicematters, your participation is crucial, and your actions can shape the future of our city and our nation.

Vote! And do it with courage, empathy and humility.

Elections are about ideas, values, and visions for the future. While we may hold differing perspectives, we all share a common goal: to advance the flourishing of our great city. In this election, Colorado Springs can be the example. We can engage thoughtfully, listen openly, and advocate passionately-but always with respect for others who may have an opinion that is different than our own.

This is the beauty of America and the incredible democratic experiment that has bound our nation together for the last 248 years.

As your Mayor, I am committed to bringing unity over division, to putting people over politics. I am committed to collaborating across the aisle and implementing solutions, not slogans. I am also committed to engaging all voices so that regardless of political affiliation, all are heard and represented in the decision-making process. I will champion the principals of democracy and use my bully pulpit to encourage others to do so as well.

This is my ongoing pledge to you.

The story of Colorado Springs will be a better story. We will be firm in our convictions while also treating each other with respect. We will welcome the competition of ideas, disagreements and differences of opinion. We will not make it personal. We will attack the problem, not the person. In the end, we will put our city over party. People above politics. Country over ideology.

So, of course, yes, get out there and vote. Furthermore, I implore you to engage with your local government. Volunteer for a campaign or cause. Contact your representatives. Attend a City Council meeting. Serve on one of our many boards and commissions. Run for local office or leadership roles. Use social media responsibly. And visit our City website, ColoradoSprings.gov

I'll leave you with these words from Abraham Lincoln, a leader whom I have always admired. I also happen to share a birthday with him.

"Elections belong to the people. It's their decision."

We are Colorado Springs!

Onward and upward.
