The Michigan Public Service Commission will hold a public hearing this week in Flint on efforts to broaden public engagement in MPSC decision-making, part of the state's overhaul of Michigan's energy laws in 2023.

The public hearing will be Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverfront Conference Center at the University of Michigan-Flint, 1 Riverfront Plaza in downtown Flint. The meeting will be in-person only.

"The MPSC wants to hear from Michiganders about ways the Commission can improve how we communicate with the public and expand ways for Michiganders to participate in important energy and telecommunications matters," MPSC Chair Dan Scripps said.

MPSC representatives will be on hand to provide background information about the Commission's work on this issue. Staff also will be at the hearing with information about customer assistance and other consumer concerns.

The Commission announced in May that it was inviting comment on further improvements the MPSC may make for communicating with the public, explaining Commission activities, expanding accessibility and participation, and enhancing the transparency of Commission proceedings.

The proceeding, in Case No. U-21638, is part of the Commission's efforts to implement Public Act 231 of 2023.

The MPSC also welcomes the public's suggestions on improving participation in MPSC proceedings by low-income residential customers, residential customers with high energy burdens, and individuals and communities impacted by MPSC decisions.

Interested persons unable to attend the hearing also may submit written comments by 5 p.m. Sept. 27, 2024, with replies due by 5 p.m. Oct. 25, 2024. Comments must reference Case No. U-21638.

Comments may be mailed to Executive Secretary, Michigan Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 30221, Lansing, Michigan 48909, or submitted electronically using the MPSC's E-Dockets websiteor by emailing [email protected].
