New Poll Highlights Web Developer Concerns about Potential Changes to the App Ecosystem

TechNet Study Reveals Unease among Web Developers on Key Issues including Security, Economics, and ProductQuality

Washington, D.C. - TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, today announced the results of a new poll conducted with Morning Consult. The app development space is quickly evolving and several new proposed changes, including lawsuits threatening to break up the ecosystem, have introduced new uncertainty for developers and their customers. The study revealed key areas of developer concerns including security, economics, and product quality.

Methodology

TechNet partnered with Morning Consult to conduct a nationally representative, self-reported, anonymous survey ofsoftware developers on the state of the web/app development ecosystem. The poll was conducted between October 4 - 7, 2024, among a sample of 310 developers. The interviews were conducted online and were weighted to approximate a target sample of developers based on age and gender. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 6 percentage points.

Key Findings

  • 92% of developers are satisfied with their jobs
  • 94% of developers like the way the current app ecosystem works
  • 83% of developers worry that fragmenting the app development ecosystem would decrease innovation, reduce app quality, or introduce security concerns
  • 89% of developers worry that fragmenting the app development ecosystem would make it more difficult and expensive to develop new and better apps
