Airport Operations Remain Smooth under Tropical Cyclone Toraji

(HONG KONG, 14 November 2024, 1230hrs) - Flight operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) during Tropical Cyclone Toraji have remained largely smooth, with the Airport Emergency Centre activated.

Runway operation and flight movements remain normal, there is no need to activate the Flight Rescheduling Control System. The airport is expected to handle 1,063 flights today. From 2300hrs last night to the whole day today, a total of 10 passenger flights have been cancelled and 20 were delayed.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) maintained close communication with the MTR Corporation, adding two Airport Express Link services to the city in the early morning with the last train to the city departing at 0145hrs.

AAHK immediately implemented the Queue Ticket System for taxis after typhoon signal no. 8 was hoisted. There were 5 delayed flights landing at HKIA between 0300hrs and 0500hrs. About 200 passengers used the system to wait for taxis at its peak. The crowd of passengers was cleared at about 0500hrs and the operation remained generally smooth.

A rest area was set up in the terminal, providing 500 chairs, mobile charging stations and other facilities. Passengers were also given supplies such as bottled water, snacks and blankets.

To ensure that the airport has sufficient staff to handle flights this morning, around 200 airport staff stayed overnight at two rest centres provided by AAHK. Meanwhile, AAHK also provides a staff shuttle bus service between Tung Chung and the airport.

AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight time have been confirmed. As land transportation to and from the HKIA may take time to fully resume, passengers should allow sufficient time to travel to the airport for check-in. Passengers can also check HKIA's website, or "My HKG" mobile app for latest flight information.
