Winnipeg, MB- Since last night, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has responded to two structure fires.
Cordova Street fire
At 7:03 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a house in the 200 block of Cordova Street.
At the scene, crews saw heavy flames and smoke coming from the house. All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters initially attacked the fire from inside the house, but had to change to an outside attack as conditions deteriorated. Firefighters declared the fire under control at 10:43 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
Maryland Street fire
At 8:12 a.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2024, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant and boarded up house in the 600 block of Maryland Street.
At the scene, firefighters saw smoke coming from the house. Firefighters initially attacked the fire from inside the structure but changed to and exterior fire attack due to changing conditions.
Firefighters searched the building an no occupants were located. No injuries were reported.
Crews also protected neighbouring houses and an apartment building from fire spread. Residents in those homes temporarily sheltered in place while crews completed their work on scene.
Firefighters switched back to an interior attack and declared the fire under control at 9:25 a.m. Damage estimates are not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The structure had previous damage from fires in October 2024and September 2024.
Anyone who sees someone actively entering a vacant building, or removing boards from windows or doors from a building, should call 911 to report the incident immediately.
If you notice boarded windows or doors that have been breached, but you do not see someone actively entering or trying to enter the building, report the incident to 311 by phone or online.
