What's the Latest With the Major Mobility Investment Program

INSIDE THIS EDITION:
The I-285/I-20 West Interchange and SR 400 Express Lanes hit significant milestones in August as both MMIP projects were awarded to private sector partners!

The I-285/I-20 West Interchange is ranked the sixth-worst truck bottleneck in the country by the American Transportation Research Institute. As a result, this project will reconstruct and widen several interstate system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 Interchange, located west of Atlanta, and add a combination of collector-distributor lanes and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west of the interchange, and along I-285 north of the interchange.

The selected private sector partner team, Legacy Infrastructure Contractors, will be contracted to complete final design and construction. Upon project completion, the improvements to this heavily traveled interchange and along I-20 and I-285 will reduce congestion and enhance safety for motorists and freight along this interstate.
Georgia DOT anticipates construction start in late 2025. The project's substantial completion is expected in 2030. The schedule is subject to change.
Additionally, the private sector partner team, SR 400 Peach Partners, was selected for final design, construction, financing, operations, and maintenance of the SR 400 Express Lanes in accordance with contractual parameters managed by Georgia DOT and SRTA. This is a huge milestone for motorists and stakeholders as the state works to manage congestion throughout this key corridor.

Construction of the new express lanes is expected to start in late 2025 and will extend from approximately the North Springs MARTA Station to north of McFarland Parkway. The express lanes are optional, variably priced lanes that provide a choice for commuters to bypass congestion, have a predictable and reliable trip, and will improve mobility for express lanes drivers and transit users along the corridor.

This project, along with existing Georgia Express Lanes facilities and future express lanes projects, aims to provide additional mobility options to motorists and transit customers along heavily traveled corridors in the growing metro region. Public transit providers like MARTA, Xpress and state-registered vanpools may operate in an express lanes corridor free of charge, and transit users only pay the standard transit fare. MARTA will operate a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the SR 400 Express Lanes starting at the North Springs MARTA station and will include stations at Holcomb Bridge, North Point Mall and the Windward Parkway.
Earlier this year, crews completed work at the SR 400 Phase 1 Design-Build project, which was pulled forward to support the upcoming express lanes. Three, new, overpass bridges at Pitts Road, Roberts Drive, and Kimball Bridge Road were constructed in Sandy Springs and Alpharetta to increase mobility and safety in the area ahead of the larger express lanes' construction.

Have you ever met someone over 100 years old that still worked every day, was inspiring, and always seemed to be everywhere at once? Might we say it's us?! August 16th, Georgia DOT celebrated its 108th birthday!

For the last 108 years, Georgia DOT has spent our time bringing countless safety and mobility improvements to people across the state. Without the cooperation with motorists, local partners, and our outstanding employees, none of this would be possible!

Thank you for your support, and here's to many, many more years of improvements to come, Georgia!

Are you a Georgia business owner and a member of a minority group? Are you interested in working with Georgia DOT on transportation projects to improve your local community and the state of Georgia?

If so, on September 12, 2024, the P3 Division will host a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Showcase. This event gives certified DBE firms, as well as businesses interested in becoming DBE certified, the virtual opportunity to showcase their services to an audience of prime firm representatives. Representatives from the DBEs will present a slide deck of their creation and field any audience questions about their company's services or topics.

Participating DBEs underwent an evaluation process to be selected to present at this showcase. This event is an effort by the P3 Division's DBE team to aid DBEs in forming meaningful business connections with firms across the transportation industry. Firms will have the chance to connect with representatives from prime firms to help them on their journey toward working on major P3 Division projects in the future.

Summer is winding down and school is back in session. Preparing for back to school can look like buying new clothes or school supplies, but it's also a time to think about safety. As children are headed back into the classrooms it's important to remember and share some key tips that will help keep them safe throughout the school year. Whether your children walk, ride their bicycle, or take the bus, it is important to follow these safety precautions:

Walkers:
  • Walk on the sidewalk if one is available; when on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic.
  • Use designated crosswalks, look left-right-left for vehicles or bikes before crossing, and obey traffic signals.
  • Everyone should watch the road, not their phones, so stay alert and avoid distracted walking.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing and always cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.
Bicycle Riders:
  • Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in a single file, or in a bike lane when possible.
  • Come to a complete stop before crossing the street; walk bikes across the street.
  • Never use electronics while riding to avoid distractions.
  • Always wear a correctly fitted helmet and bright clothing.
Bus Riders:
  • Wait with the little ones at the bus stop.
  • If you encounter a stopped bus while driving, you must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus starts moving, before you can start driving again.
  • Even without flashing lights, watch for children, especially in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times.
  • Teach your kids to stand, at a minimum, five giant steps from the curb and board one at a time using the handrail when getting on and off the bus.

These are just a few tips that could help your children stay safe when traveling to and from school. Motorists who are driving through and around school zones should always remember to obey school zone speed limits, maintain eye contact with children crossing the street, and never pass a bus loading or unloading children.

Wishing everyone a successful, fun, and safe school year!

Have you been wondering about your answers to our polls? Well, we've been saving them for this moment!
  1. The project you're most excited about is the 16@95 Improvements project. Savannah, you really showed up with 36% of all responses looking forward to developments in support of this key corridor!
  2. A whopping 45% of you commute less than 30 minutes a day, but we're working to get that down even further and make your commute a little bit safer, too! We've got MMIP projects in many of the major corridors across the state, so we're hoping you get to see the benefits every day!
  3. Your music taste varies widely! The winning summer road trip anthem was "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, but there was a two-way tie for second place with 25% rocking out to "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen and 25% cruising to "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys! We can't blame you for wanting to jam out, but make sure to keep your volume down and your eyes on the road.
