Girl Scouts donate flag collection box to City Hall

Published on October 31, 2024

Girl Scout Troop 70233 recently donated a custom flag depository box to the City of Lakewood as part of their Bronze Award project.

If you have a worn out or unserviceable American flag, place it in the red, white and blue painted wooden box in the lobby of Lakewood City Hall during business hours.

Each month, the members of Troop 70233 will collect the flags, and Boy Scout Troop 134 will conduct a dignified flag retirement ceremony, the respectful way to dispose of the American flag.

The flag retirement ceremony is done in a reverent atmosphere to show respect and gratitude for the nation's symbol. Flags are properly folded, and then fully burned to ashes in a large bonfire. The ashes are then buried while attendees offer prayers of thanks to honor the flag's service and the values it represents.
