Alumnus Thrives in Chemical Industry

LIVONIA, MICH. - Nathan Jones, a graduate of Madonna University's forensic science program, has successfully transitioned his career from away from the laboratory. Currently serving as the Operations Director of the Ferndale facility for Element Solutions, Jones's journey exemplifies the versatility of a forensic science degree and the opportunities available within the chemistry industry.

After graduating from Madonna, Jones initially sought entry-level positions in forensic science but found limited opportunities in his desired geographic location. Recognizing the transferrable skills he had acquired through his studies, he broadened his job search and secured a role as a Quality Control Chemist at Macdermid Enthone, the parent company of Element Solutions.

Over the past several years, Jones has steadily progressed his career through the ranks of the organization, assuming increasing levels of responsibility. He has held positions like QC Lab Supervisor, Quality Manager, and now Operations Director. Throughout his career, Jones has embraced challenges and leveraged opportunities to expand his knowledge and skills.

As Operations Director, Jones oversees the safety, efficiency, and overall operations of the Ferndale facility. His responsibilities include managing budgets, inventory, and capital expenditure projects. While the role presents numerous challenges, Jones emphasizes the importance of time management, delegation, and a curious mindset. "curiosity and critical thinking are a great pair of traits to foster," said Jones. "The curiosity will drive you to understand the problem, and the critical thinking will give you a vantage point to find a solution."

Jones attributes his career success to the solid foundation provided by his forensic science education at Madonna. The program equipped him with critical thinking skills, a strong understanding of chemical testing techniques, and a versatile approach to problem-solving.

Looking ahead, Jones believes that the chemistry industry will continue to evolve, driven by technological advancements and changing regulations. He anticipates increased automation in manufacturing processes, which will require employees to possess a higher level of technical expertise.
