City of South Perth sends its first residential waste tonnages to Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility

Residential waste from the City of South Perth is set to be converted into energy, with the first portion of the City's agreed tonnage already delivered to the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility.

The City has become the second member of Rivers Regional Council behind Serpentine Jarrahdale to make its first contribution to the facility, which will distribute sustainable energy to WA households and businesses.

The City has committed to divert up to 13,000 tonnages per year of waste from landfill - the equivalent of five Olympic-sized swimming pools or approximately 1300 garbage trucks.

"Delivering the first tonnage of municipal waste to the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility has been a very exciting milestone for our city," City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said.

"Waste from our community that would otherwise have been added to landfill will now be used to generate renewable energy," Mayor Milner added.

"This more sustainable waste management service will contribute towards the diversion of up to 460,000 tonnes per annum of municipal solid waste to landfill and towards producing approximately 38MW of base load power for export to the grid per annum."

Kwinana Energy Recovery estimates that approximately 486,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided per year.
