Unifor members at Extendicare have voted 92% in favour of ratifying 10 new collective agreements, achieving meaningful improvements in wages, benefits, and workplace inclusivity.
"This agreement builds on the progress we've made and reflects the dedication and determination of our bargaining committee and members," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "We've successfully delivered real improvements that recognize the vital work of our long-term care workers at Extendicare."
The three-year agreements, effective August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2026, include a 3.5% general wage increase annually, a permanent wage adjustment of $2.50 for Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and the enshrinement of the $3.00 permanent wage enhancement for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) prior to the general wage increase.
"This round of bargaining demonstrates the power of collective action and our ability to achieve meaningful gains at the table. While there's still work to be done to address the challenges in long-term care, this agreement is an important step forward for our members," said Payne.
Additional improvements include expansion of the vision care, dental plan, the introduction of gender-neutral language in the collective agreements and better alignment of sick leave provisions with extended Employment Insurance benefits.
Unifor represents 1,750 members working at Extendicare homes working as Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs), housekeeping staff, dietary aides, maintenance workers, and administrative personnel.
