Peter Mac welcomes release of new Victorian Cancer Plan

12 September 2024

Peter Mac Chief Executive, Professor Jason Payne, has welcomed the release of the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024 - 2028.

Professor Payne joined Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, at Parliament House as she launched the Plan today.

"It is excellent to see that many of the short, medium and long-term objectives in Victoria's Cancer Plan reflect work already underway at Peter Mac," Professor Payne said.

"The Cancer Plan's emphasis on integrating research and clinical trials into Victoria's healthcare system, as well as improving access to trials for patients in regional and rural areas align perfectly with Peter Mac's plans for the future.

"We also applaud the Cancer Plan's focus on improving access to care for community groups who typically have poorer outcomes after a cancer diagnosis, while also highlighting the importance of optimal care pathways to ensure there is a consistent, evidence-based approach to the way cancer care is provided."

Professor Payne said significant progress is being made in cancer treatment, care and research.

"However, we also know that more than 50,000 Australians will die from cancer this year and there is much more work to be done," he said.

"We look forward to supporting the roll out of the Victorian Cancer Plan over the next five years while continuing to provide world-class, evidence-based care for people with cancer."

Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, said the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024-2028 is the third to be legislated in Victoria and identifies ways to prevent cancer, increase survival rates, improve people's experience of receiving cancer treatment and deliver better outcomes for Victorians with cancer.

"Victoria has some of the best cancer survival outcomes globally, but we know they're not experienced equally - this new plan will help ensure that every Victorian can get the care they need, where and when they need it," Minister Thomas said.

"Whether it's through increased screening rates, improved participation in clinical research or innovative new treatments - we want a future that is cancer-free, and this plan will help in getting us there."

The new Plan is made up of nine medium and long-term goals including increasing the one and five-year survival rates, halving the proportion of people diagnosed with preventable cancers, boosting the proportion of women who rescreen for breast cancer and increasing the number of new clinical trial enrolments in regional and rural Victoria.
