On International Migrants Day, we celebrate the contributions of migrants worldwide and recognize the increasingly complex factors driving migration and forced displacement, including conflict, repressive authoritarian regimes, devastating natural disasters, violence, and persecution. Across the globe, the Department of State is leading efforts to enhance local support systems for migrants and refugees, improve access to lawful migration pathways, and strengthen emergency planning and response. These efforts strengthen U.S. national security and foster collaboration and stability worldwide while reducing irregular migration and helping those in need.
Over the past four years, as part of a multi-pronged strategy to reduce irregular migration, the United States has led a historic expansion of access to lawful migration and protection pathways to the United States and other partner countries while promoting accountability for those who prey on vulnerable migrants and profit from irregular migration. Thanks to the generous assistance from the American people, and together with our partners, we are making it possible for millions of migrants and refugees to find protection and settle in countries closer to their home countries, contribute to their local economies, and rebuild their lives instead of making dangerous journeys to the United States. We are driving innovative solutions, including labor pathways to other countries, to help meet labor demand and skills gaps, which helps local businesses and strengthens communities while ensuring worker protections.
We commend other countries joining efforts in support of migrants, refugees, conflict victims, and stateless persons. We continue to work toward a future where migration is safe, lawful, and voluntary.
