Silurians Press Club Honors

Reporting from across the newsroom was recognized by the Silurians Press Club in its Excellence in Journalism competition, with seven medallion wins, including the President's Choice Award.

The Silurians Press Club, a New York-based organization and one of the oldest press clubs in the country, honors work about the city and the tri-state area.

Dan Barry and Karen Zraick won the President's Choice Award for "The Men Lost to 20 Bruckner Boulevard," an investigation into a troubled construction site in the South Bronx where three workers died in less than three years. The award is the highest honor of the competition.

Times journalists won six other medallions:

• Nicholas Fandos won in the Breaking News Reporting category for hiscoverage of Congressionalredistricting in New YorkState and thechaos that surrounded it.
• Anne Barnard won in the Environmental Reporting category for her reflection of New York 10 years after Hurricane Sandy.
• Alex Traub won in the Arts and Culture Reporting category for a pair of features on Barbara Maier Gustern, a beloved New York vocal coach, and Will Malitek, one of the last movie rental clerks left in the city.
• Eliza Shapiro, Brian M. Rosenthal and Jonah Markowitz won a public service medallion in the Editorials, Commentary, Public Service category for their investigation into private Hasidic schools that have reaped millions of taxpayer dollars while failing to provide students even a basic education.
• Joseph Goldstein won in the Feature News Reporting category for "Sabrina's Parents Love Her. But the Meltdowns Are Too Much."
• Joseph also won with Sharon Otterman in the Health and Science Reporting category for their coverage of New York during the Omicron variantCovidwave.

The Times also had six merit awards, or runners-up:

• Troy Closson for "What the Racist Massacre in Buffalo Stole From One Family" in the Feature News Reporting category.
• Michael Gold and Grace Ashford for their series about Representative-electGeorge Santos in the Investigative Reporting category.
• Jan Ransom's coverage of violence, dysfunction and cover-ups at Rikers Island earned her a Public Service merit award in the Editorials, Commentary, Public Service Category.
• George Rush and John Leland for "The Mysterious Patient in Room 23: The Hermit Baroness" in the People Profiles category.
• And Alex Vadukul won two merit awards: one for "The Life and Death of Daniel Auster, a Son of Literary Brooklyn" in the People Profiles category, and one for "Ghosts of New York's Glamorous Past Haunt an Empty Pub" in the Arts and Culture Reporting category.
