Larson Statement on the 2025 Social Security COLA Announcement

East Hartford, CT - Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2025 will be 2.5 percent.

"The annual cost-of-living adjustment is vital to ensure our nation's nearly 70 million Social Security beneficiaries can make ends meet," said Larson. "However, the COLA is not nearly enough for seniors living on fixed incomes, especially the more than 5 million Americans who receive monthly checks below the poverty level. There is an urgent need to act to not only protect Social Security from the cuts that my Republican colleagues have proposed but enhance benefits, and improve the COLA, which has not been addressed in more than 50 years. Democrats' plan would both enhance benefits and ensure the annual COLA keeps pace with rising costs by incorporating the CPI-E into the formula to specifically address the expenses seniors face, an idea supported by the AARP. It's time for Congress to vote!"

Rep. Larson's Social Security 2100 Act, introduced with the support of nearly 200 House Democrats, includes a provision to improve the annual COLA by incorporating the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) into its annual calculation, ensuring beneficiaries receive the higher of the two annual adjustments calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
