Celebrating PSU's Olympic Legacy

Portland State University boasts a proud history of alumni who have achieved Olympic greatness. From record-breaking runners to Paralympic medalists, these exceptional athletes have represented PSU on the world stage. Here, we highlight their inspiring journeys and remarkable accomplishments.

Eliana Mason '17

A 2-time Paralympic medalist, Eliana played Goalball for Team USA in the 2016 and 2020 Paralympics. Graduating in 2017, she trained alongside fellow Paralympians Jen Armbruster and Asya Miller at PSU.

Alan Webb '16

Graduating in 2016, Alan had a record-breaking high school running career and competed in the 1500m at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. He later returned to PSU as an Assistant Coach for Track and Field in the 2018-19 season.

Evan Jager '15

Evan Jager is a two-time Olympian and one-time Olympic Silver medalist, competing in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Jager attended Portland State to finish his degree while training professionally with Nike, graduating in 2015.

Bree Schaaf '02

Bree Schaaf played volleyball during her time at PSU, graduating in 2002. After graduation, she competed in the sports of Skeleton and Bobsled, racing in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.

Anthony Amado '91

Anthony Amado was the 1985 NCAA Division II wrestling champion at Portland State University and was inducted into the NCAA II Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017. He competed as a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team in Seoul.

Travis West '90

Travis West wrestled for Portland State University from 1986-1990, becoming the 1988 NCAA Division II Champion at Portland State University. West wrestled in the 1992 Olympic games for Team USA and was inducted into the Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016 and the NCAA II Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017.

Dan Mello '72, '75

Dan Mello wrestled for PSU from 1972-1975, winning two West Regional Championships. He earned a spot on the 1980 Olympic team, and while the U.S. didn't participate due to a boycott, Mello went on to be inducted into the Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Debra Lynn Waples '77

Graduating in 1977, Debra captained the USA fencing team and competed in the 1984 Olympics.

Rick Sanders '68

Rick Sanders is a two-time Olympic Silver Medalist, wrestling in the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games. He wrestled for PSU from 1965-1968 and was a five-time national champion. He was inducted into the Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Lee Allen '54

Lee Allen led an undefeated college wrestling career during his years at Vanport (soon to be Portland State) from 1952-1954. He competed in 2 Summer Olympics, in 1956 and 1960, and was inducted into the Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.
