Volunteers Beautify Grounds Around McComas Village

More than 75 volunteers pitched in to beautify the grounds around McComas Village on Sunday, Aug. 4.

McComas Village houses seven social fraternities and seven social sororities near the south side of Main Campus. Students, alumni and their families and friends were among the volunteers who pulled ivy and spread more than 30 yards of mulch around the buildings between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with midday lunch provided by organizers.

The UToledo Greek Village Policy Committee planned the community event in collaboration with the Office of Student Engagement, Office of Auxiliary Services, Facilities and Construction and Dr. Todd Crail of the UToledo Department of Environmental Sciences.

"The McComas Village cleanup brought together people of all ages invested in making the McComas Village a 'home' for our current undergraduate members," said Jill Morris, an alumna and chair of the Greek Village Policy Committee. "We are excited about the work accomplished this weekend and the commitment that it shows from the University to supporting the fraternity and sorority experience here on campus."

"It was back-breaking work, but the collective efforts of many hands did about three months of work in one day," said Mike Dennis, who oversees Auxiliary Services as associate vice president of finance at UToledo. "In addition to the exterior cleanup, many students and alumni have been painting and working inside the houses. The Greek Village Policy Committee and Auxiliary Services will continue to work together throughout the year to make further enhancements to the McComas Village living experience, but this was a great start. We're excited for students to return in a few weeks."
