Historic Nomination of Senator Marco Rubio

to Serve as Secretary of State

Senator Marco Rubio would be the first Latino

ever to hold the position of Secretary of State

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) today released the following statement from NALEO President Claudia M. Frometa following President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Senator Marco Rubio to serve as the next Secretary of State:

"NALEO congratulates Senator Marco Rubio on his historic nomination as the first Latino and Cuban-American to head the United States Department of State. As a son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio brings a distinct perspective to this position. His knowledge and experience, including his service on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as Vice Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, further make him an unparalleled choice to head the State Department.

"The Secretary of State is one of the most powerful Cabinet positions that determines our nation's role on the global stage, making countless decisions that affect the everyday lives of all Americans. NALEO hopes Senator Rubio's leadership will help stabilize the unprecedented challenges and conflicts the world faces today.

"As President-elect Trump heads back to the White House, we applaud this appointment and hope to see a Cabinet and administration that reflect today's America. We hope this decision also serves as a cornerstone for him and his administration to address the priorities of Latinos and all Americans seeking solutions, unity, and prosperity.

"NALEO stands ready to work with the Trump administration and Congress to promote an inclusive Cabinet and administration. We look forward to Senator Rubio bringing his experience and background to the job and carrying out the country's foreign policy with competence and responsibility."
