Honoring the Life of Officer Darron Burks: A Community United in Grief

On September 26, 2024, the City of Dallas was shaken by the tragic loss of Officer Darron Burks, who was senselessly executed while sitting in his patrol car in the parking lot of For Oak Cliff. The loss of Officer Burks has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the broader Dallas community.

Darron Burks was not just a dedicated public servant; he was a beloved member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, having pledged in the Fall of 2002 at Paul Quinn College. Before joining the Dallas Police Department, Officer Burks was a math teacher, committed to educating and inspiring young minds. His passion for social justice was evident as he marched on the front lines for various causes, advocating for change and equity. He eventually decided to join the Dallas Police Department because he wanted to be part of the solutions to the very issues he fought for-a testament to his dedication to making a difference in his community.

The senseless act that took his life has left many in mourning, but it has also united the community in a profound display of love and respect. Less than 24 hours after his untimely death, members of Omega Psi Phi and For Oak Cliff organized a candlelight vigil in his honor. The vigil drew hundreds of people, including members of the Dallas Police Department, city leaders, fraternity brothers, and community members, all coming together to pay their respects.

The vigil was a testament to the impact Officer Burks had on those around him. The outpouring of support from all corners of the city highlighted the love and admiration so many felt for him. His loss is a reminder of the dangers faced daily by those who serve to protect our communities, but it also underscores the strength and unity that can arise in the face of tragedy.

As we remember Officer Darron Burks, let us also remember the values he stood for-service, brotherhood, and community. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire others to carry forward the work he was so passionate about.

May Officer Darron Burks rest in peace and may his family and loved ones find solace in the outpouring of love from the community he served so faithfully.

Protect Yourself and Your Community from Pesky Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes may be small, but their bite can carry serious health risks. Protect yourself and your loved ones from these pesky critters by following a few simple tips to keep mosquitoes at bay:

  • Cover Up: When you're outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, be sure to wear long sleeves and pants.
  • Repel Them: Use an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to reduce your chances of being bitten.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so remove any standing water around your home. Even small amounts in bird baths, gutters, or plant saucers can become breeding grounds.
  • Keep Mosquitoes Out: Make sure your window and door screens are intact to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

Spot a Breeding Ground? Take Action!Did you know that mosquitoes often nest in scrap or illegally dumped tires? These tires collect rainwater and create the perfect breeding environment. If you see illegally dumped tires in your neighborhood, don't hesitate-call 311 to report them. Your report can help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus and Zika.

Together, we can "Fight the Bite" and protect our community from mosquitoes. By staying informed and taking these simple precautions, we can enjoy the outdoors while keeping ourselves and our neighborhoods safe!
