Trinity Reads 2024: Unbought & Unbossed by Shirley Chisholm

The Sister Helen Sheehan Library is thrilled to announce this fall's selection for Trinity Reads is Unbought & Unbossed, by Shirley Chisholm. With the upcoming election, and other current events, Shirley Chisholm's words remain relevant and inspiring. Chisholm's background as an immigrant, her connection to the working class, and of course her political career will encourage our community to engage in conversations, thought, and ideas around social change and advocacy.

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to serve in the US Congress and the first woman to seek the Democratic nomination for president, breaking barriers and paving the way for current political leaders, such as Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trinity Reads is intended to build an intellectual and social bond among students, faculty, staff, and other community members. It provides a collective experience of reading, thinking about, and discussing challenging ideas and themes that raise important issues such as those surrounding social justice. A series of cultural and academic activities-film screenings, debates, panel discussions, book discussions, and lectures-are organized in support of these goals. Please stay tuned for more announcements this fall about campus activities and programming around this text.

"A tremendously impressive book." -Washington Post

"What [Chisholm] did was so pioneering. . . . She embraced what made her different and used it as her superpower." -Regina King

"I want to be remembered as a woman . . . who dared to be a catalyst of change." -Political pioneer Shirley Chisholm-activist, member of the House of Representatives, and former presidential candidate.
