CNH Revolutionizes Farming with Real-Time Machine Learning and Precision Application

This article originally appeared in the July 29, 2024 issue of CropLife magazine .

CNH's sense and act technologies is designed to maximize efficient use of crop inputs automatically through real-time machine learning and precise application.

As the parent company of trusted brands Case IH, New Holland, STEYR, and Raven, CNH brings decades of agricultural expertise to the forefront of innovation. CNH's sense and act technology portfolio empowers farmers with increased precision and efficiency, ultimately improving their overall operation and profitability.

According to CNH, sprayers and spreaders reach unprecedented levels of precision and input use efficiency with the company's sense and act
technologies. It starts with streamlined decision-making. The tech stack determines the right amount of input to apply as operators drive over the field, so there is no need to make these adjustments on the go. Then, it uses CNH's most precise nozzle and rate controls to ensure accurate variable-rate application with the most efficient use of inputs. Computer Vision Machine Learning (CVML)-based systems will set a new standard with maximum input efficiency, the company says.

Sense and Act: The Most Intuitive Sensor-Based Technologies

CNH's sense and act technologies are the easiest smart spraying technology to add to your variable rate application process today. The portfolio centers around the Augmenta Field Analyzer, which simply mounts to the top of the cab. Augmenta, compared to other similar solutions, is easier to install and integrate with existing systems.

The CVML-based component detects environmental factors such as vegetation index, basing variable rate application prescriptions on what it sees, and the application it is providing. Currently, Augmenta supports fungicide, plant growth regulator (PGR), and harvest aid applications.

One Augmenta camera-based unit can scale to fit all CNH sprayers, from the smallest booms CNH offers to the largest. The lens has up to a 138-foot field of view to scan the crops, taking in vegetation index data, the company explains. Then, it uses this real-time data to adjust application rates to deliver the right amount inputs in the right spot, every time.

Augmenta works best with CNH's nozzle control systems (AIM Command FLEX II, IntelliSpray 2, Hawkeye 2) and rate controllers (Raven Rate Control Module). With the nozzles' unmatched precision and multiproduct section control, operators can ensure they are getting the most accurate and precise variable rate application.

The Future of Sense and Act Technologies and Why to Invest Now

In the coming years, CNH plans expand its sense and act capabilities that will provide selective spraying by section or nozzle. Sense and act technologies will continue to add value by responding to industry challenges:

  • Herbicide Resistance - major herbicide groups are experiencing weed varieties that evolve with resistance to its treatment due to the compound's consistent presence in the soil. As more farmers pivot to more complex solutions to combat resistant crops (e.g., glyphosate "plus"), costs for the herbicide increase. Selective spraying will help minimize the impact of these increasing costs by distributing specific herbicide treatments only on the target weeds - leaving little to no residue.
  • Regulatory Factors - federal litigatireon and rulemaking are promoting sustainability by implementing more restrictive standards, higher approval costs, and reduced application credits. CNH sense and act technologies help you reduce your applications to stay within the new label standard - and gives you the as-applied data reports to verify it.
  • Productivity / ROI - sense and act will continue to improve application quality and input cost savings. As this technology is fully developed over the next few years, users will continue to see more efficient and higher-quality applications.

CNH continues to accelerate its development and testing to deliver maximum value to customers. Investing in CNH's sense and act technologies, both now and in the future, empowers end-users to take advantage of the best possible ROI and cost savings with the most intuitive technology.

CNH is dedicated to empowering farmers to work smarter - on their terms - with precision technology. The cutting-edge innovation is built for Case IH, New Holland, and STEYR machines and is available through the aftermarket via the Raven brand.
