New DAS Volunteer Coordinator

Hi everyone! My name is Tiffany Campbell, and I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. After graduating from the University of Indianapolis, where I spent my free time volunteering at the city's animal shelter, I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to making a difference in the community. I've been in the nonprofit and volunteering world for over 5 years, enjoying the opportunity to connect with people and make a difference.

Fun Fact: Dallas Animal Services is where I adopted my cat, O'Malley, last year. He is a bright orange tabby who I treat like my child.

Thank you all for your warm welcomes and guidance during my first few weeks here. It's been so heartwarming to see your dedication and love for the animals at DAS. While I've only had the pleasure of meeting a handful of you so far, I'm already feeling at home. I look forward to getting to know more of you as we work together to support our furry friends. I'm really excited to be part of such an incredible team!

If you ever need anything, I can be reached through the volunteer inbox, [email protected], my email [email protected], or through the volunteer coordinator phone number (214) 412-4592.

Meet & Greet Protocol

We're excited to share an update on our meet and greet protocol to ensure every interaction is safe and enjoyable for our potential adopters and furry friends alike. During each visit, potential adopters can participate in up to 3 meet and greets, with each session limited to 10 minutes to keep everyone comfortable, especially in the heat. Puppies aged 4 months and older are eligible for play yard meet and greets, regardless of their shelter duration, providing them a chance to stretch their legs and show their playful side.

For kitten meet and greets, interactions will occur kennel-side with open doors. We kindly ask that visitors refrain from picking up kittens, and gloves are available for their safety during these interactions. To initiate a kitten meet and greet, visitors start at the adoption desk, where our team guides them to the nursery, ensuring a smooth and pleasant experience for both visitors and kittens.

Puppies under 4 months should have their meet and greets at their kennels. If the kennel has bars, visitors can interact using gloves, while interactions with puppies in glass kennels are limited to visual contact.

Remember, prioritize puppy and kitten meet and greets first, and schedule sick animal meet and greets last to prioritize health and safety.

Community Cat Day

DAS and Operation Kindness will be offering free spay/neuter services for 50 community cats on July 26th at the Operation Kindness Hub, offered exclusively to City of Dallas residents.

We are looking for volunteers to assist throughout the day: 4 volunteers are needed from 6:30-8:30AM to help with morning drop-offs, 2 volunteers from 9:00am-12:30pm to help rotate cats to and from surgery, and 2 volunteers from 12:30-3:00pm to help with afternoon pickups. If you are available to help with this event, please sign up here.

Behavior Notes

Our dogs need notes to help us find their perfect family! Many of our dogs currently do not have any notes in Chameleon. Having detailed information is crucial for potential adopters. Unsure which dogs need notes? Stop by the volunteer coordinating desk for a list.

If you interact with any dogs (even if it's through the kennel), please fill out the behavior observation form here. Staff will then enter thee notes into our shelter software as soon as possible (typically within a day or two).

If it's your first time submitting behavior notes, we have created a resource guide to help you out! Here is the link. If you need any help, please feel free to stop by the volunteer coordinator desk or ask a staff member.

Stay tuned for a new position coming in the next few months specifically for getting behavior notes!

Newspaper Pickup

We have a generous donor who regularly collects and donates newspapers to DAS. We are currently looking for volunteers to assist with picking up and delivering these newspapers, which play a crucial role in caring for our kittens and maintaining the cleanliness of our surgery room kennels.

The pickup location will be on Walnut Hill, West of 75. If you are available to pick up newspapers Wednesdays or Thursdays biweekly throughout the summer, please email us at [email protected].

Shelter Needs

Our Animal Care team is currently in need of supplies!

If you have any puppy pads, kitten toys, pipe cleaners, or towels that you would like to donate, we would be extremely grateful. These items help the animals at DAS thrive and make the job of caring for them that much easier.

Daycation Update

We're thrilled to announce that our Daycation program is thriving, with 176 dogs having gone on a Daycation so far! Here is a breakdown of the outcomes from daycations: Adoptions - 63 (41%), Rescue - 39 (25%), Foster - 34 (22%), and Foster to Adopt - 14 (9%). These outings are crucial for showcasing our dogs' personalities outside the shelter and attracting potential adopters. Your participation not only enriches the lives of our dogs but also significantly increases their chances of finding loving homes.

Reminder: If you've completed your canine training, no appointment is needed for a Daycation! We just ask that you send us an email or text before you come by so we can have supplies ready.

Volunteer Shout Out!

Every newsletter we try to randomly select an active volunteer to recognize for all of their hard work! This month, we would like to shout out Joshua Norman. Thank you for everything you do as a volunteer.

Do you have any pets at home?

Yes, we have both cats and dogs at home. 2 of them are foster fails from DAS.

What is your favorite volunteer position?

Dog walking and socializing scared dogs. Also, I love to host and assist at adoption events.

What is your favorite part about volunteering with DAS?

I enjoy being a part of a dedicated team of volunteers and fosters finding the best possible outcome for all the DAS animals.

Do you have a favorite DAS story to share?

While at an adoption event we were volunteering at we met a scared pup named Thunder. We immediately knew he would be going home with us if he wasn't adopted at the event. As the event ended, he had basically stayed by mine and my partners side the whole time. The most amazing part of the story is how he came out of his shell and became a happy puppy which led him to finding his forever home. Being a part of DAS is an amazing feeling and seeing all the dedicated people at the shelter makes it even that much better.

Welcome New Volunteers!
