‘Women’s Councils: models, skills and voice for a just society in Eritrea’

Under a joint programme "Country-Based Support Scheme (CBSS) 2018-2019 - ERI" by ISCOS of Italy, National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) and local authorities, more than 300 women representatives in 5 regions of Eritrea have been trained.

By focusing on women in the formal sector and disadvantaged workers, training across the country was given in basic social, cultural and economic rights. In addition, knowledgeable and skilled councillor women in trade unions and vulnerable communities received training. Each council was represented by 100 women delegates from the region with a total of 300 women trainees. Vulnerable women (including single-headed households in rural areas) in the informal sector were economically empowered to establish small income generating businesses thereby enabling them to improve their livelihoods through the provision of sheep and goat reproduction.

The overall purpose of the programme is to build social, economic and cultural platforms/processes and accelerate new opportunities for disadvantaged outreach women achieve equal access to productive employment and decent work playing an active role in conflict prevention/resolution for building sustainable peace in Eritrea.
