BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER: WATCH FOR SCHOOL ZONES

As the school year draws near, drivers should expect increased traffic and congestion in various parts of the City. School buses will be picking up students, children will be riding their bikes to school, and parents will be dropping off their kids.

Drivers need to slow down and stay alert, particularly in school zones during the hours before and after school.

Bright yellow signs and flashing lights in school zones are there to catch your attention and remind you to drive carefully to prevent accidents.

Starting Monday, August 12th, the flashing lights in Lewiston's school zones will be activated-a full week before the Lewiston School District (LSD) begins the new school year. This early activation is intended to help drivers adjust to the change. Additionally, the Lewiston Police Department (LPD) will increase enforcement around Lewiston schools starting the week of August 19th, the first week of school for the LSD.

Remember, speeding fines in school zones are significantly higher, and depending on the situation, drivers could face other penalties for endangering public safety. Idaho Code 49-658, Speeding in a School Zone incurs a fine of $156.50. Additionally, Idaho Code 49-1422(1), passing a school bus that is loading or unloading is a misdemeanor offense that requires a court appearance and a fine of no more than $1,000.00.

The LPD urges all drivers to stay alert, especially in school zones, to ensure the safety of our community's youth.
