President Karis: We all advocate broad-based participation in the European Parliament elections

"By voting in the European Parliament elections, the people of Europe set the course for the political choices that are made in the European Union. It is vital to ensure that as broad a range of people as possible take part in the forthcoming elections, young and old alike, so that the issues the parliament tackles are of relevance to Estonia's future and to the future of Europe as a whole." So spoke President Alar Karis today upon meeting with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.

The head of state said that Estonian voters are inspired by their country's experience as an EU Member State over the last 20 years. "Surveys have shown that we are very European-minded, but the question always remains as to how to bring Europe closer to everyone in Estonia," he remarked. He expressed his hope that the election campaign would be marked out by constructive debate on key issues such as employment, economic progress and support for Ukraine.

Discussing the challenges posed by climate change, President Karis remarked that Europe should view the green and digital transitions as a single process.
