2024 Seattle Fallen Firefighter Memorial

The sacrifice paid by fallen Seattle firefighters was remembered in a public ceremony in Pioneer Square on Oct. 4.

During the service, the names of all 55 Seattle Fire personnel who have died as a result of their service as a firefighter/EMT or paramedic were read aloud. The list dates back to 1891.

Steeped in tradition, the service included posting of the colors by the Walter Kilgore Memorial Honor Guard and moving performances by the Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums band. The ceremony concluded with the traditional ringing of the bell and the song Amazing Grace.

The Seattle Fire Department hosts the memorial each year to call attention to the dangers of the firefighting profession as well as the ultimate sacrifice made by firefighters and their families.

Seattle residents showed their support for firefighters again later that night by visiting their neighborhood fire station to watch the apparatus flash their red lights for Light the Night. Community members were also invited to switch out an exterior light on their home with a red bulb in honor of all fallen firefighters across the nation.
