U.S. Navy and NORESCO Celebrate Completion of Microgrid Project at Naval Submarine Base New London

GROTON, Conn. - Oct. 23, 2024

NORESCO, a leading provider of comprehensive energy solutions, helped cut the ribbon in celebration of a new microgrid system at Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE NLON). The ceremony commemorated construction completion and highlighted how the innovative system can support 100% of SUBASE NLON's power requirements in the event of grid outages. The work was delivered through a $183 million guaranteed energy savings performance contract. NORESCO is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

CAPT Kenneth M. Curtin Jr., Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine Base New London, hosted the event and described the microgrid system as "the first of its kind in the entire Navy to support such a complex electrical infrastructure." He said, "Today exemplifies our commitment to positively impacting SUBASE's Fleet, Fighters, and Families through the best infrastructure and service support we can deliver."

The new cybersecure microgrid system was installed as part of a modification to the existing ESPC project which already provides 10.75 MW of electrical power generation capacity and generates steam heat for mission-critical waterfront operations and training buildings.

The project also included other energy conservation measures for electrical infrastructure upgrades, steam distribution system improvements, new LED lighting, and a new base-wide cybersecure energy management controls system. The SUBASE NLON improvements will generate more than $183 million in energy and operational savings over the 18-year performance period.

"The cutting of the ribbon today celebrates the Navy's ability to completely island its installation in the event of a utility outage and dynamically adjust loads and generation to provide true mission assurance," said Darcy Immerman, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Growth, NORESCO. "We are proud to support the Navy's 'First and Finest Submarine Base," your critical national security mission, and your Sailors, whom we sincerely thank for selflessly serving our country in the Navy's 'Silent Service'."

Federal employees involved with the project won a Federal Energy Management Program Contracting award from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2018, and the project was reported as the lead story in the Society of American Military Engineers' Energy Issue of The Military Engineer in 2021.
