SBE Council Statement on the Presidential Debate

Washington, D.C. - Following the first presidential debate, Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement:

"Inflation and economic uncertainty have challenged entrepreneurs and small business owners for the past three years. Policy solutions that lower costs, improve capital and labor market conditions, and boost both consumer and business confidence are desperately needed. If it weren't for the innovative hard work of the U.S. business community and their dedicated employees over the past several years, economic challenges and pain points could have been far worse. Blaming inflation and America's economic challenges on the 'greed' of the private sector, as President Biden did during the debate, is unacceptable and insupportable."

"Small businesses - and businesses of all sizes - need policies that support investment, innovation and growth. That means tax relief provided by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act must be extended or made permanent. Regulation needs to be reined in and modernized. The United States must lead on global trade to open markets for our small businesses and workers, and our intellectual property must be protected. Excessive government spending and nanny-state micromanagement need to be restrained."

"While the focus of the post-debate discussion will be on President Biden's performance and meandering, his policies have not been favorable to Main Street, economic stability and U.S. competitiveness. He said nothing tonight that will boost the confidence and outlook of entrepreneurs and small business owners."
