Barbara Tagger Named Deputy Superintendent of Selma to Montgomery and Tuskegee National Park Service Site

National Park Service (NPS) South Atlantic-Gulf Regional Director, Mark A. Foust, announced the selection of Barbara Tagger as the Deputy Superintendent and acting Superintendent of Alabama's Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site and Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail.
In addition to Barbara's previous terms serving as the acting Superintendent for all 3 park sites, she has also played an integral role in the development, creation, and management of several National Park Service units. These units include the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park (Maryland)/Harriet Tubman National Historical Park (New York), to name a few. Prior to this appointment Barbara Tagger served as superintendent of Horseshoe Bend National Military Park in Daviston, AL.
Tagger's extensive 40+ years with the NPS brings a wealth of experience and expertise in historic preservation and African American history. Beyond her work with the National Park Service, Ms. Tagger has contributed to academia as an Instructor of History at Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Emory University, teaching courses in World History, African American History, and American Studies. She has lectured extensively across the United States and the Caribbean, and collaborated with Parcs Canada to identify and preserve Underground Railroad-related sites in Canada.
Ms. Tagger's dedication to historic preservation and interpretation of African American history has earned her numerous accolades, including the 2013 Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award from the Baltimore African American Tourism Council and the 2002 William C. Everhart Award for her sustained achievements in fostering appreciation of cultural and historic heritage within the National Park Service.
Tagger holds a bachelor's degree in U.S. History and Political Science from Howard University and a Master of Arts degree in U.S History from Atlanta University, and attended Emory University, Atlanta, GA as a doctoral student (ABD) in the Institute of Liberal Arts Program, specializing in Urban History, African American Studies, and Historic Preservation.
