Nonprofit focuses on supporting those with Alzheimer’s

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - The Alzheimer's Association is working toward a future free of Alzheimer's and dementia, with a clear mission to advance research, early detection, risk reduction, and provide quality care.

"Our real vision is a world where we don't have to worry about these things," said Melanie Gaebe from the Alzheimer's Association.

North Dakota residents benefit from a range of support services, including education for both community members and professionals, care consultations for individuals and caregivers, and guidance on navigating the challenges of Alzheimer's.

"Our staff is available to go in person or virtually to visit with people who are having some concerns, caregivers especially, to help them work through even planning what comes next because this disease looks different day to day," Melanie emphasized.

Community involvement is key. The association recently hosted the Walk to End Alzheimer's across the state and is still accepting donations to reach its fundraising goals.

One of the most exciting developments in the field is the approval of new treatments that slow the progression of Alzheimer's.

"We truly have hope now, where even five years ago, we didn't have treatments that would change and slow the progression of this disease. We have those now," Gaebe shared. "We have two FDA-approved treatments. And we've got about 24 more, I believe, in the pipeline."

With 1,100 research projects currently underway, the Alzheimer's Association is committed to finding further breakthroughs.

For those facing a recent diagnosis, Gaebe reassures them that they are not alone, "We're here to support caregivers, we're here to support people living with all types of dementia."

Community walks also serve as a powerful reminder of the collective strength and support that exists, bringing people together from all walks of life to raise awareness and hope.
