TORRANCE, Calif., November 4, 2024 - In honor of Veterans Day, Torrance Memorial Medical Center will host a commemorative ceremony for its veteran workforce on Monday, Nov. 11, from 12- 1 p.m. on the patio adjacent to its Hunt Tower. The ceremony will feature a tribute to the flag, a welcome and thank-you to the hospital's veterans, the reading of names of those who served, and will culminate with a group photo. Hospital leadership will also recognize more than 90 physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers who have served in the U.S. military and celebrate their new mission of providing health care services to South Bay residents.
One such veteran to be celebrated this year is Marine Corps veteran Frank Paour. Paour was born at Torrance Memorial, as were many of his family members. He was drafted during the Korean War and began Marine Corps service in February 1952, where he served in the Military Police. In June 1953, he was transferred to Japan. Paour has been a volunteer escort at Torrance Memorial for 30 years and enjoys helping patients navigate the medical center.
Another veteran being honored is Torrance Memorial cardiologist Bruce Johnson, M.D. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1974, where he completed his medical training before serving. Dr. Johnson was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside County, where he served as head of internal medicine and director of the critical care unit for two years. To counter the psychological effects of the war on soldiers, Dr. Johnson and the base psychiatrist enlisted the aid of volunteers from the local Alcoholics Anonymous chapter to act as mentors for the young soldiers. Dr. Johnson has been affiliated with Torrance Memorial since 1979.
WHY: Torrance Memorial will observe Veterans Day by recognizing its veteran employees, who play a vital role in ensuring the medical center delivers the highest quality healthcare services to South Bay residents.
