Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO) is pleased to announce 36 new Denver Legacy Businesses. A Denver Legacy Business is defined as a longstanding, independent business that has contributed to community character and vitality and holds cultural significance. Among other criteria, the business has operated for more than ten years, has annual gross revenue between $30,000 and $5M, and currently has a brick-and-mortar location in the city.
The total number of Denver Legacy Businesses has now reached 85. 43 neighborhoods are represented across the City and County of Denver and the median longevity is 22 years in business. Residents are encouraged to visit the Denver Legacy Business Registry to explore newly added businesses. The complete roster and map of Denver's Legacy Businesses can be found here.
"Denver's local businesses are the soul of our community, and I'm proud to honor these institutions of Denver and signal to the rest of the city that these are family businesses that deserve your support," said Mayor Mike Johnston. "I grew up in a family business and have deep respect for the families who have built businesses in the city and kept them going through thick and thin. "Denver Legacy Businesses are part of the fabric of what makes Denver so special," said Adeeb Khan, Executive Director of Denver Economic Development & Opportunity. "We encourage everyone to visit the Denver Legacy Businesses Registry. This program now includes 85 distinguished businesses, and it will continue to grow, honoring those who have been a vital part of Denver for decades. We encourage everyone to offer their support this holiday season and support your favorite small business or discover a new one."
"We are thrilled to be recognized as a newly designated Denver Legacy Business," said Adrian Simon, Co-Owner of Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. "As a family-owned business for over 38 years, it is an honor to have the loyal support of our community. In addition to providing great ice cream, we pride ourselves on being a job training organization as well as a business. Each year we train and employ over 20 employees in what is their first job. We congratulate those in our cohort as well as we know what it takes to operate a longstanding business and this recognition only further signifies our accomplishments and contributions to community vibrancy."
The Denver Legacy Business program is modeled after other successful implementations of Legacy Business designations including San Francisco, CA. Recently the Denver Legacy Business Program was awarded the Bronze Award in the Neighborhood Development Category by the International Economic Development Council. Businesses can self-nominate or be nominated by others. Denver's program will continue to expand with future application periods and application rounds will be announced.
