Chamara Herath has been appointed a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson University.

Herath specializes in computational solid mechanics and its implications in additive manufacturing (AM). He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and completed his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Clarkson University. His doctoral research focused on advancing the understanding of hierarchical microstructure-property relationships in AM metals through computational methods.

Herath's academic journey has been marked by numerous achievements, including the development of microstructure-informed, mechanism-based constitutive models for hierarchical materials, which integrate sub-grain microstructural features elucidated through advanced material characterization techniques. His work further extends to developing thermo-mechanical simulations for AM processes, involving mesh optimizations to enhance computational efficiency. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Herath has gained valuable industry experience as a Mechanical Engineering Principal Investigator at Additive Manufacturing Innovations, LLC, where he collaborated on a NASA SBIR-funded project to develop a multiscale analysis and design framework for high-performance materials and components. His expertise spans various fields, including computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), computational material science, solid mechanics, and numerical analysis.

Herath served in several leadership roles in the Clarkson University Graduate Students Association and participated in the Academic Integrity Committee. Outside of his professional pursuits, he is a sports enthusiast, having served as President of the Clarkson University Cricket Club and played for the University of Moratuwa Baseball Team.
