UW-Parkside to Host Election Experience 2024

Somers, Wis.- With the United States Presidential Election on Nov. 5 quickly approaching, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is proud to present The Election Experience 2024. This nonpartisan program offers a variety of events designed to bring students, faculty, staff, and community members into conversation about U.S. elections, processes, democracy, and our larger political context.

The events include presentations by guest speakers, student research, art gallery exhibitions, panel discussions, and interactive debate watch parties to name a few. Programming is made possible through collaborations with the Tommy G. Thompson Center, the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign (WDC), and the Andrew Goodman Foundation.

Emeritus Professor Dr. Peggy James created the first Election Experience in 2012 with the goal of promoting participation in democratic engagements among UW-Parkside students and in the surrounding communities. Today, it continues to encourage civic learning and engagement throughout Kenosha and Racine counties.

Featured Events

Among the many noteworthy events during this Year's Election Experience, there are two that stand out. On Sept. 17 from 7-9 p.m., UW-Parkside will host U.S. Democracy: The Problem or the Answer? in the Student Center Ballroom. This event is made possible by The Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership.

Harvard Law School Professor Michael Klarman, Yale University Professor Hélène Landemore, and Georgetown University Professor Jason Brennan will debate and discuss the Constitution, our institutions, and the political challenges facing our democracy. Live streaming will also be available for this event. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required: www.uwp.edu/usdemocracy.

On Oct. 10, from 5-6:15 p.m., Dr. Charlies Franklin will discuss the Outlook for the 2024 Elections in Wisconsin and the Nation in the Alumni Room in the UW-Parkside Student Center. Dr. Charles Franklin is a professor of Law and Public Policy at Marquette Law School and the Director of the Marquette Law School Poll.

With the presidential and congressional elections approaching, Dr. Franklin will discuss the state and national forces that are shaping the elections. The Marquette Law School polls of Wisconsin and national voters help explain where we are, how we got here, and what to watch in the run-up to the November elections. Brown Bag Events

This year's Election Experience will also feature a series of Brown Bag lunch discussions, with presentations by UW-Parkside faculty members and community organizations covering topics ranging from "The History of Presidential Assassination & Attempted Assassination in America" to "Satired Out? Political Humor in 2024." These informative events are free and open to the public and will be held every Wednesday between Sept. 11 through Nov. 6, from 12-1 p.m. in Rita L131.
